ElderEase is an innovative application designed to connect senior citizens in Metro Manila with caregivers who provide essential services to enhance their quality of life. The new platform focuses on accessibility, ensuring that these services are provided at an affordable price for users.
Many older adults in this region lack access to specialized care for their age-related health issues due to financial constraints, and family members often face caregiving challenges and stress. ElderEase aims to bridge this gap by facilitating access to professional caregivers, ensuring seniors receive the support they need to maintain their well-being.
“In the Philippines, it’s rare to see a lolo or lola associated with nursing homes in ads, posters, or telenovelas. Apart from costs running high — one nursing home’s cost starts at P95,000 a month — there is an unspoken stigma in placing aging parents in nursing homes. It is often viewed as reneging on family responsibilities, bringing hiya not only to the children but also to the parents and their families. This can be misinterpreted as a lack of love, making older people feel unwanted and rejected.” (GMA News Online, 2024)
ElderEase provides respite care designed to alleviate physical exhaustion, stress, appointment conflicts, and feelings of isolation among family caregivers. This service offers family caregivers a much-needed break from their responsibilities. In addition to respite care, ElderEase also assists with medication management, health monitoring, and therapy. Furthermore, transportation services are available to help caregivers and their loved ones attend appointments, run errands, and participate in social events. Companionship is also offered, ensuring that those cared for have support and interaction during family caregiver absences.
Research shows that it is crucial for families to collaboratively share the responsibilities of caregiving. When one individual shoulders the entire weight of caregiving, it can have serious repercussions for both their physical and mental well-being. Sharing caregiving duties can help alleviate stress and promote better health outcomes for everyone involved, especially the well-being of the person receiving care. Sharing the load allows for better care, reduced stress on the primary caregiver, and can strengthen family relationships.
